Taki Tachibana (立花 瀧)
A high school boy living in central Tokyo. Taki is hardworking, passionate, and slightly hot-tempered. He works part-time at an Italian restaurant in Shinjuku and spends his free time sketching cityscapes.

Mitsuha Miyamizu (宮水 三葉)
A high school girl from the fictional town of Itomori (based on Hida-Furukawa, Gifu). Mitsuha is a shrine maiden who dreams of living in Tokyo. Her family runs Miyamizu Shrine, which produces kuchikamizake (shrine maiden sake).

Tessie & Sayaka
Mitsuha's best friends in Itomori. Tessie (Katsuhiko Teshigawara) is the son of the town's construction company owner, and Sayaka Natori is a broadcast club member. Together, they help Mitsuha with her plan to save the town.

Ms. Okudera (奥寺先輩)
Taki's senior colleague at the Italian restaurant. She's fashionable, kind, and perceptive enough to notice when Taki is acting differently. Their "date" scenes take place in Roppongi and the surrounding area.
